Moffat Community Woodlands
the story so far...
Moffat Community Woodlands [MCW] was established in 2015 in response to an offer from Annandale Estates for the community to purchase Gallow Hill following clear-felling of the site of commercial timber.
For Tom Mulholland, Peter Beck-Samuels, Colin Brydon, Juliet Brown, Peter Bower, and Robbie Porteous this was a unique, once in a life-time opportunity, so they set about forming a steering group to assess the possibilities for community ownership of the hill. The group was named 'Moffat Community Woodlands' because another piece of woodland, Tank Wood, was left to the community in the 1930s, and whilst Dumfries and Galloway Council currently look after this wood, it is hoped that the Moffat community will take on that responsibility in future. Following numerous public meetings, there was sufficient support to formally start negotiations and fund-raising to purchase Gallow Hill for the community. As of September, 2016 we now have more than 180 members, and growing all of the time.
On May 24, 2016 The Scottish Land Fund awarded us the necessary funding to transfer ownership of Gallow Hill from Annandale Estates to the community of Moffat. We hope the transfer will be completed in October 2016. The fun will start then.
